Sinharaja is the only ever green rain forest in Sri lanka. It is situated in the south western region of the island. It contains many rivers and streams. It also contains a large number of plants used for a Aurvedic medicine. It has also become the home of many rare birds, animals, reptiles and insects. Nearly 60% of the tress found in this forest are endemic to Sri Lanka. It became a National Heritage Wilderness Area under the National Heritage Area act in 1988. This forest was also named as a world Heritage site by UNESCO in 1989.
Although this forest is legally protected, it has become the latest victim of some projects aimed to attracted more tourists to the country. Apart from that the resident living in the surrounding villages enter this forest for their various needs. They cut down trees and spoil this unspoilt forest.
